Meditation – It’s Power

meditation6A powerful pattern for self-realization, self-development, introspection, self-heal…. the list of takeaway from constant practice of meditation is endless. A lot has been written, spoken, preached and today you are about to receive another article on this subject. You could hit the delete button and move on, or, just stop for a moment and check out another perspective of why there is so much attention directed at this subject called MEDITATION.

My purpose for putting pen to paper on this topic, primarily stems from the cries of participants, mentee, coaches, peers, friends, and relatives on how to better handle certain aspects of their life – personal & professional. It is even more interesting how the unconscious or to some the sub-conscious mind directs through signs for this to happen. Following my training sessions conducted last week, I found there was a need to further address the subject of Meditation. All through the week there were signs – a distress phone call for help -where state change was created through breathing & meditation, a meditation article in a magazine, a Facebook post on meditation, so much so that I thought, let me pen a few words on my perspective of meditation. My first encounter with meditation, my feeling about it then and how over time this changed my thinking and how today, I look at the subject of meditation as a healing process for the mental & physical well-being of a person.

“When the man / women is right inside…… The world will be right…….” a powerful true statement.

I grew up in the 70’s & 80’s where at social gatherings, meditation was spoken off, particularly at student parties, community discussions on campus and elsewhere…. The after mart of Hippie Era. So, if you did not know or speak about it in those environment, you were not “hip”. I would snub and shun away from those communique, primarily because all I related about the subject was, it was practiced by hippie, “drugie”, meditation5long haired groupies, that talked of meditation, pyramids and crystals. They would talk of meditation under a man-made pyramid structure in their lounge. My conclusion… what a bunch of weirdos. Today, on reflection I wondered how closed and narrow minded, my perspective was of these people, more than that, how bigoted I was about the subject of meditation. Little did I know / understand the implications of this practice, what it does and can do for a person.

With time, my whole outlook of the subject had changed, through exposure, education and self-practice of meditation. Today, with a bit more understanding, exposure, learning, experience and practice, I see meditation as the best remedy for many dysfunctional behavior & life pattern changes, that we as human beings can benefit, if we practice meditation regularly.

Mediation as such, is a vast topic. I would not do justice in addressing the topic of meditation in one blog. I will in this blog, just whet your appetite and provide a brief to this subject, with the hope that you get a feel of what it is and what it can do for your holistic well-being. In my future blogs, I will further share my perspective of what it does, how to meditate, why we need to practice it especially in today’s environment, and what are its outcomes.

Interesting enough, today when I share this concept to many, a percent of the audience, still looks at me with skepticism…. In response, rather than argue, defend or justify the benefits out of meditating, my inner self directs me to understand…. “When the student is ready, the teacher will arrive”… just as it happened to me. So we just move on, with the hope that the individual will follow the sizzle, and in time, commence on the practice and enjoy the outcome… of meditation of self-betterment.

The Base of Meditation

Vedanta Philosophy explains what a mental process meditation is, and goes on to say, concentration (Sanskrit – Dharana) is the base stage of this process. With continuous practice, this concentration becomes effortless and continuous, thereby progressing to the state of meditation (dhyana). The mind is ready to flow continuously to the required objective. The culmination of this process is total absorption (Samadhi). Put basically, this is the journey one would take in the practice of meditation: Concentration / Meditation / Absorption or in Sanskrit, Dharana / Dhyana / Samadhi

Meditation & Concentration

Today meditation to some, is understood as deep concentration (laser beam) on an object. Indirectly what this means, everyone mediates 24/7, as we concentrate a lot daily on almost everything, from survival to success in life. It’s through the power of concentration that we activate our five physical sense, visual, auditory, kinestitic, olfactory and gastro (VAKOG). Though concentration the mind acquires the quality of lens to absorb the knowledge on the subject. Meditation is the gateway of learning for the outer and inner world of our self.

Meditation & Reflective Reasoning

Reasoning is when a person achieves a clear logical understanding of things / issues etc. Meditation is a perception of that. Reasoning stems from the head, while mediation is heart driven, the home of our spirit.

Meditation & Contemplation

During the process of Contemplation many spend time reflecting, some take it to the stage of reflection through to the supreme being within oneself their spirit (or God for many). Meditation is more than contemplation, it’s the flow of the mind towards it. Akin this to a bee, buzzing around a flower waiting to rest on the flower and sip the nectar. The state of meditation is when the bee is rested on the flower and tasting the sweet nectar.

Meditation & Prayer

There is a distinction between prayer and meditation. Prayer is directed to a personal divine spirit. Meditation begins with effort, but ends with the absorption into the spirit within oneself … images concepts, techniques, patterns are all stepping stones in this journey. Best reflection of this is… we PRAYER (communicate) to God, and while we are in MEDITATION we listen to the soundless spirit (God) within us, which brings us in union with that spirit.

In my future blogs, I will cover the following aspects of mediation:

Meditation a technique to gain mastery over the mind, by cultivating a single thought.
Meditation is a natural necessity for the soul, and to provide the mind with rest and rejuvenation
Meditation, like music with relevant pauses extenuates the sound of the music….
Meditation awakens the dormant power of the mind

To provide a scientific understanding of meditation, and if done properly what are its outcomes and healing powers to man, I refer you to the video link below titles, the scientific power of meditation.

End of an Era for Singapore…..

We, today mark the end of an era for Singapore, as Mr Lee Kuan Yew (commonly referred to as LKY) who passed away on the 23rd March 2015 is laid to rest…. Points to ponder on the mark of a great Statesmen….51DWYZY76QL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_ LKY

This is what he had to say in a recent interview…….

“I have no regrets. I have spent my life, so much of it, building up this country. There’s nothing more that I need to do. At the end of the day, what have I got? A Successful Singapore. What have I given up? MY LIFE.”

Two key views on Leadership that LKY always drove and lived by……..

  1. “I’m very determined. If I decide what something is worth doing, then I’ll put my heart and soul to it. The whole ground can be against me, but if I know it is right, I’ll do it. That’s the business of a leader.”
  2. “The task of the leaders must be to provide or create for them a strong framework within which they can learn, work hard, be productive and be rewarded accordingly. And this is not easy to achieve.”

LKY – views on Life…….

  1. “Life is not just eating, drinking, television and cinema…The human mind must be creative, must be self-generating; it cannot depend on just gadgets to amuse itself.”

Have a fruitful Life…… Cheers David Nair

Power of the Unconscious Mind

I had a mentor who kept drilling into me, to make the unconscious mind our “best ally.” Initially I scoffed at the idea and thought that mentor had lost it, and with age, was out of this planet. Little did I realize how naive I was, to the power of the unconscious….Unconscious

Over time and repeated guidance… its full power had unfolded…. So much so that I have experienced in many cases, by communicating to the unconscious and when there is total congruency between our states within yourself and the universe, the law manifests itself into being….. Wow to some… yes Wow.

Carl Jung, put it so succinctly , until you make your unconscious, conscious, the conscious will always direct your Life and you will call it FATE…..

I love to share a very simple experience on the above. This happened at 11 am this morning….
As many who have been interacting with me would know that the last 6 weeks since my arrival back into India was packed back to back with sessions, in particular the weekends ….. This coming weekend was the only weekend that I had unbooked.

Unbeknown I got a call from a past senior manager who I had coached some three years ago. Before he commenced the conversation he mentioned it was a con call with a CFO from an IT company in Mumbai. He introduced and following the pleasantries, the CFO indicated his need for specific interventions with his senior executive team….

He proceeded to say they had a fabulous year in revenue and as reward to the team the company is taking the group to Pataya, Thailand. They felt, it would have be of extreme value, if they could spice it with, some self- developmental work.

We proceed to discuss the developmental work, and within 30 minutes of my outlining a brief for intervention, he concurred and accepted that idea for the development of his senior core executives.

Hmmm, so the weekend is now booked… in Pataya Thailand… some work, some sighting seeing some water sport (as Pataya is renowned for it) and back into India, mainstream work on Monday….

To the many they might refer to this as LUCK, but to a few, they know and call it, “Labor under correct knowledge”, or put it bluntly “you make your luck”.

Numerous lessons learnt. Keep ploughing… digging and the harvest will come to fruit elsewhere. Never get bogged down with “the crabs” who like to pull others down to their levels. Never get disheartened, when, an associate from Singapore who rightly pointed out in our discussion yesterday, he had trained his staff and many competitors have head hunted them, or that some of those past staff had taken his clients away from him. As I pointed to this associate, that is normal business, but never to anchor and burden oneself with that baggage, just move on and let the Law of the universe work with you not against you…. That in itself had come home to roost in my case today.

It is interesting, I can now tick another from the list of things that I wanted to be able to have done…. Fly in and Fly out into countries on weekends for programs…. One that was on that list for over 4 years.
Friends, the power in believing in oneself, and setting the sail right for whatever you want, keeping one’s head down, bum up and just beaver at the task on hand…..

Creating SMALL SHIFTS, to GENERATE BIG GAINS.
Have fun doing it.

Shake the Dirt & Step Forward, Shake the Dirt & Step Forward…..

One evening a farmer’s donkey fell down a deep well. The animal cried piteously all though the night and for hours the next morning. The farmer thought through the morning and discussed with some of his friends at the corner shop, where the men would usually gather to discuss the happening of the previous day and what the highlights in the newspaper are. The farmer tossed his concern of the fallen donkey to the group.

donkey in a well

The neighbours and the farmer decide the donkey was too old and the well needed to be covered up. So they proceed to meet mid-afternoon, to fill the well in and thereby hopeful put the donkey’s cry for help to rest.

The group gathered at three pm, each with a shovel in their hand and proceed to shovel and began to shovel the dirt into the well.

As dirt was shovelled into the well, the donkey was crying out louder, and louder. Then all of a sudden the cry of the donkey stopped. The farmer peaked over the well, to see the what had happened. To his amazement he was astonished to see the donkey with every shovel of dirt that fell on the donkey’s back, the donkey was doing something different….He would shake off the dirt and take a few steps forward. He kept repeating this as dirt was shovelled down the well.

Pretty soon to everyone’s amazement the donkey stepped up over the edge of the wall and totted off….

In Life too … dirt will be shovelled at us. All kinds of dirt….. Now the trick is ….. role model the donkey, shake it off and take a step forward, shake it off and take a step forward….. it is very simple, we tend to complicate the simple to the difficult. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. It does not matter how deep the well is, always remember, never give up, we can get out of trouble by just repeating the process….Shake the dirt, step forward, Shake the Dirt,  step forward.
