Meditation – It’s Power

meditation6A powerful pattern for self-realization, self-development, introspection, self-heal…. the list of takeaway from constant practice of meditation is endless. A lot has been written, spoken, preached and today you are about to receive another article on this subject. You could hit the delete button and move on, or, just stop for a moment and check out another perspective of why there is so much attention directed at this subject called MEDITATION.

My purpose for putting pen to paper on this topic, primarily stems from the cries of participants, mentee, coaches, peers, friends, and relatives on how to better handle certain aspects of their life – personal & professional. It is even more interesting how the unconscious or to some the sub-conscious mind directs through signs for this to happen. Following my training sessions conducted last week, I found there was a need to further address the subject of Meditation. All through the week there were signs – a distress phone call for help -where state change was created through breathing & meditation, a meditation article in a magazine, a Facebook post on meditation, so much so that I thought, let me pen a few words on my perspective of meditation. My first encounter with meditation, my feeling about it then and how over time this changed my thinking and how today, I look at the subject of meditation as a healing process for the mental & physical well-being of a person.

“When the man / women is right inside…… The world will be right…….” a powerful true statement.

I grew up in the 70’s & 80’s where at social gatherings, meditation was spoken off, particularly at student parties, community discussions on campus and elsewhere…. The after mart of Hippie Era. So, if you did not know or speak about it in those environment, you were not “hip”. I would snub and shun away from those communique, primarily because all I related about the subject was, it was practiced by hippie, “drugie”, meditation5long haired groupies, that talked of meditation, pyramids and crystals. They would talk of meditation under a man-made pyramid structure in their lounge. My conclusion… what a bunch of weirdos. Today, on reflection I wondered how closed and narrow minded, my perspective was of these people, more than that, how bigoted I was about the subject of meditation. Little did I know / understand the implications of this practice, what it does and can do for a person.

With time, my whole outlook of the subject had changed, through exposure, education and self-practice of meditation. Today, with a bit more understanding, exposure, learning, experience and practice, I see meditation as the best remedy for many dysfunctional behavior & life pattern changes, that we as human beings can benefit, if we practice meditation regularly.

Mediation as such, is a vast topic. I would not do justice in addressing the topic of meditation in one blog. I will in this blog, just whet your appetite and provide a brief to this subject, with the hope that you get a feel of what it is and what it can do for your holistic well-being. In my future blogs, I will further share my perspective of what it does, how to meditate, why we need to practice it especially in today’s environment, and what are its outcomes.

Interesting enough, today when I share this concept to many, a percent of the audience, still looks at me with skepticism…. In response, rather than argue, defend or justify the benefits out of meditating, my inner self directs me to understand…. “When the student is ready, the teacher will arrive”… just as it happened to me. So we just move on, with the hope that the individual will follow the sizzle, and in time, commence on the practice and enjoy the outcome… of meditation of self-betterment.

The Base of Meditation

Vedanta Philosophy explains what a mental process meditation is, and goes on to say, concentration (Sanskrit – Dharana) is the base stage of this process. With continuous practice, this concentration becomes effortless and continuous, thereby progressing to the state of meditation (dhyana). The mind is ready to flow continuously to the required objective. The culmination of this process is total absorption (Samadhi). Put basically, this is the journey one would take in the practice of meditation: Concentration / Meditation / Absorption or in Sanskrit, Dharana / Dhyana / Samadhi

Meditation & Concentration

Today meditation to some, is understood as deep concentration (laser beam) on an object. Indirectly what this means, everyone mediates 24/7, as we concentrate a lot daily on almost everything, from survival to success in life. It’s through the power of concentration that we activate our five physical sense, visual, auditory, kinestitic, olfactory and gastro (VAKOG). Though concentration the mind acquires the quality of lens to absorb the knowledge on the subject. Meditation is the gateway of learning for the outer and inner world of our self.

Meditation & Reflective Reasoning

Reasoning is when a person achieves a clear logical understanding of things / issues etc. Meditation is a perception of that. Reasoning stems from the head, while mediation is heart driven, the home of our spirit.

Meditation & Contemplation

During the process of Contemplation many spend time reflecting, some take it to the stage of reflection through to the supreme being within oneself their spirit (or God for many). Meditation is more than contemplation, it’s the flow of the mind towards it. Akin this to a bee, buzzing around a flower waiting to rest on the flower and sip the nectar. The state of meditation is when the bee is rested on the flower and tasting the sweet nectar.

Meditation & Prayer

There is a distinction between prayer and meditation. Prayer is directed to a personal divine spirit. Meditation begins with effort, but ends with the absorption into the spirit within oneself … images concepts, techniques, patterns are all stepping stones in this journey. Best reflection of this is… we PRAYER (communicate) to God, and while we are in MEDITATION we listen to the soundless spirit (God) within us, which brings us in union with that spirit.

In my future blogs, I will cover the following aspects of mediation:

Meditation a technique to gain mastery over the mind, by cultivating a single thought.
Meditation is a natural necessity for the soul, and to provide the mind with rest and rejuvenation
Meditation, like music with relevant pauses extenuates the sound of the music….
Meditation awakens the dormant power of the mind

To provide a scientific understanding of meditation, and if done properly what are its outcomes and healing powers to man, I refer you to the video link below titles, the scientific power of meditation.

Words of Wisdom from an Icon

Beautiful, simple words of wisdom from a noble prize winner…. Mother Teresa.

I was going through the Biography of Mother Teresa, and could not go past this passage. Felt the need to share with those who would not have had the privilege of reading the works of this lady.

I found this little passage great to reflect on ….. Be enlightened, find inner peace & serenity, and hope it can help some out there in a similar way.

It is amazing how the switch takes place within each of us by the second. When we are well grounded with steadfast principles that we could hang on to  nothing will swing it either way. Enjoy the extract ……….

“People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centred ; forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.” – Mother Teresa

Simple basics to lay that platform as we journey through life. Cheers David Nair
